Review

The story revolves around Maia, daughter of a poor tailor whose ultimate goal in life was to serve the Emperor of A’landi as the imperial tailor, in a land where women can only be seamstresses and not master tailors.

When her father and war crippled older brother were summoned by the Emperor to replace the deceased imperial tailor, Maia takes the place of her brother in his garb and reaches the palace. Only to find that she has to compete with eleven other master tailors from all over the country.

Her trials do not end with the competition. She gets riled up among palace politics and is set forth to achieve some impossible feats. The Emperor’s Lord Enchanter takes a fascination upon her and sets out with her to protect her from death.

Maia’s story has been weaved together like an intricate piece of clothing – dainty and beautiful. Maia’s character evolution from the start to the end of the book is stimulating, inspiring, and touching all at the same time. The magic element has been deftly handled – neither over- nor underwhelming, just the right bit to add to the beauty of the story.

I simply loved the chemistry between Maia and Lord Enchanter Edan – delicate but powerful. Their playful banters and passionate emotions were simply heart-warming. Their desperation to be together no matter the situation or consequences is soothing. The couple as a whole is swoony.

Overall I loved this retelling of Mulan. It’s worth investing time on reading it.
